Byrhtnoth “died in defense of his lord, England, and Christendom thanking God for all joys of life. And this thing preserved (by chance?!) survives to overthrow the text-book estimate of the England of Æthelred.” - J.R.R. Tolkien, Notes on The Battle of Maldon

I had to take a break from this thread for 2 months due to work & personal matters but I'm still working my way through all of Tolkien's known letters for those interested in following along. I am through 70 letters so far, with only 4 published in "The Letters of J.R.R. Tolkien"
For those interested, here's a thread to follow along as I explore the letters of J.R.R. Tolkien - both published and unpublished. 1/x

At the end of Tolkien’s “The Bovadium Fragments” is an essay by Bodley Librarian Richard Ovenden (who kindly signed my book and many others’) that provides a helpful and interesting background to the development of the auto industry in Oxford and the context of Tolkien’s story

Newman is sort of the spiritual grandfather of Tolkien, having been a father-figure to the Oratorians like Fr. Morgan who were in turn father-figures to Tolkien. Just earlier this year the first definitive proof of Tolkien's having read Newman was uncovered by Michael Devaux
On this Solemnity of All Saints, it is a great joy to include Saint John Henry Newman among the Doctors of the Church, and, at the same time, on the occasion of the Jubilee of the World of Education, to name him, together with Saint Thomas Aquinas, as co-Patron of the Church’s

If you've never read the Pearl poem, it is a beautiful poem. These are the 3 editions of the Pearl poem owned by Tolkien. He contributed to the preparation of the one in the middle.
