New open-access paper on ethics & deepfakes, by me & my coauthor @CharacterGap! When is deepfaking dishonest? We offer a philosophical account to help answer that. Can well-meant deepfakes be honest? We argue it’s possible but harder than you might think!.

3/3 But it also grieves me deeply to know that Stephen Daniel is no longer shaping the minds of undergraduates and brightening rooms with his grin and belly-laugh. Let's miss him dearly as we remember him warmly.

2/3 It's in part thanks to him that I got into grad school, no doubt, but it was his love of life, his kindness, and his joyful intellectual rigor left the deepest impressions on me. I know I'm supposed to rejoice in the memory of his life, and I do.

1/3 One of my undergraduate mentors, emeritus professor Stephen Daniel at Texas A&M University, has passed away. Dr. D, as we undergrads affectionately referred to him, was a wonderful teacher, scholar, and person.

Pre-pub draft available, but this will be a chapter in a new Routledge book, “Virtue Theory and Video Games: Level Up Your Character”, edited by Nicholas Baima & Sarah Malanowski, ETA probably next year. There’s a bunch of excellent, rigorous philosophy happening in this volume!.

When you’re trying to record your lecture videos, but the construction workers outside intermittently drill, then tag in the people honking car horns to pick up summer camp kids, and they repeat the process, repeat, repeat, repeat. #Teaching #highereducation

I'm excited to be a part of this meeting tomorrow! I'll be talking briefly about how to think about honest/dishonest actions with deepfakes. #aiethics #deepfakes #techethics.

Had a blast competing in the Super Smash Bros tourney with our awesome @WFU_Esports students at the @WaketheArts event this weekend. Didn't get far, but, hey, I won a set against a strong player! 😆 Fun being the only professor in the comp! #SSBU #eSports.

I just read the excellent paper, "Authorship and ChatGPT" (Co-authored by @chris_ranalli.) The authors argue persuasively that LLMs--at least contemporary ones--like ChatGPT aren't truly authors. The writing is very good, too! #ai #aiethics #techethics
