This obsession constantly took surprising turns, relentlessly expanding my knowledge and imagination. He is the one artist who definitively changed my life both gor good and for ill. There will never be anyone like him again in cinema as such but he was neither a snob nor

I also went to weird commercial screenings of his newer releases when possible. These were always already basically vacant theaters, long before that became commonplace.

It was only when but torrent took off that I finally got into a position to get at the depths of his filmography, commissioning people to rip rare VHS's and go grab cinameteque streams on laptops at INA years before their commercial release.

His ferociously humorous and experimental wit engaged me from my first encounter with a deteriorated VHS of On Top of the Whale. It was the cinema of my dreams and I scrounged for decades to get more glimpses at his brilliance.

By chance, I was a runner-up for a post-doc at Aberdeen in the same year when Ruiz started a short term professorship there. I only learned a few years later of this near miss.

Branco released my pirate subtitles for the DVD re-issue of La ville des pirates (1984)— my first ever effort at either subtile timing or Fr-Engl translation, refined to some extent by a French collaborator, but still very awkward. It thrilled me: the purest aidacity of pirates!

I have honestly been in profound mourning since the death of Raúl Ruiz. I had not caught up before tonight with Sarmiento's re-edit of The Wandering Soap Opera. It is simply fantastic.
