It's amazing how many profs at mid ranking universities give "R1 or bust" type of advice, as though that's the only reasonable thing to aim for

I specifically remember stating that I'd be comfortable at a place like my undergrad alma mater (
@UCentralMO
) and being chastised for it. That's around the time I discounted most unsolicited advice during my PhD days.

Hey, I got the R1 advice too! And a woeful, she’s very under placed when I accepted my position 15 years ago ;)
