also since I'm now hopping on the research talk circuit, I've decided to make a new professional (??) animated profile pic (shout-out to my partner Brian for knowing exactly how to position the camera according to my specifications 😆)

There's only so much that I can say in 280 characters, so come to our talks and visit our demo booths (and take home your own barrier-grid animation fidget toy 😉)! See you in Busan~ 🇰🇷

I really should make a longer thread about FabObscura once I get around to it...until then, here's a GIF of a parallax-based animation that we made with the system! (s/o to Rufus Butler Seder for sharing the animation with me)

Barrier-grid animations are a clever way to create a moving picture that doesn’t actually move — w/o electronics. MIT's "FabObscura" software helps you produce bolder designs for these displays, which can be attached to objects in homes, stores, & more: https://t.co/TTO2CCZFj7

I'm curious to hear what folks would have done in that situation and if anyone has ideas on how to make autonomous vehicles safer!

My friend commented that "riding in a Waymo dehumanizes the riders". I'll be thinking about that one for a while. In the meantime, I guess I'll use the 3 complimentary Waymo rides I got for getting out of the situation alive.

I'd usually feel safer in a Waymo late at night than going into the car of a complete stranger. But this reminded me of how there are situations any human with enough common sense knows to get the hell away from, while a robot would sit around defenselessly.

I tried to keep my head low, out of fear that some of them had guns. We didn't know what else to do; there was no alarm system, no way to override the controls. We considered calling the police. After the longest 10 minutes of my life, the car was finally able to get us out.

We contacted Waymo support and they were minimally helpful. To make matters worse, calling support automatically turned on both the emergency and backseat lights, which only drew more attention to us. Even upon seeing us in the car, men continued throwing things at the windows.

As we were stranded there, the group started crowding around us. Some tried to enter the vehicle. Others threw beer cans at the window. At some point, people were sitting on the car. My friend and I watched from the backseat in horror as chill lofi beats played on the speakers.
