Dan has been doing incredibly interesting work on Actor GC. Glad that the work is recognized and presented at PLDI. Dan is excellent speaker!.
I gave a talk at PLDI '25 about the future of Actor GC in Apache Pekko - with applications to #akka #erlang and #elixir. It's the culmination of my 6+ year PhD at UIUC, and I tried to make the talk really fun and easy to follow. Check it out!!.

None of the fault pattern was new. But, the combination of multiple different (well understood) faults penetrated the defense in depth. How to reason about system/infra reliability in the presence of a collection of concurrent, correlated faults is an interesting problem.
Full report for yesterday’s Google outage. - not feature flagging a new code path.- null pointer crashing a binary when reading empty fields from Spanner.- remediation causing a thundering herd as there was no exponential backoff.- which required manual throttling to recover from

Well said article by @profvjreddi on The Academic Pipeline Stall: Why Industry Must Stand for Academia. """.You don’t get applied research without basic research. You don’t get a talent pool without a talent pipeline. You don’t get scale without exploration. """.

This would be a huuuge loss of @siebelschool @uofigrainger ! I'd cry if Adam leaves, but I also will really appreciate anyone who has openings for Adam and Amanda. This is a great great opportunity for any department to build up or significantly boost Systems Security Research!.

The argument that "one can have anorexia and still make do in life, so that food may not be important or key to others" is quite irrational. I'm happy for colleagues who can raise funding from other sources like industry. But, not everyone can or should do that. And, industry.
The NSF is an important institution. But the idea that it is “the” key to academic grant support is a myth. I was a prof for 15yrs (‘99-‘14). I received a total of $670K in grants from NSF. That’s $45K/yr - barely enough to support even 1 PhD student. I graduated 12 PhD students

Sad to see the sunset of @usenix ATC. It owns some of my favorite systems research like UVM, QEMU, DTrace, ZooKeeper, Raft, not to mention Sendmail, NFS, Kerberos, X, Tcl, etc. It loses its identity in recent years, but is still among the most hacky conferences I truly enjoy.
