I think being underprepared is actually a blessing in most situations. I don't think anyone goes into a situation perfectly prepared, which means they're almost always overprepared, which is inefficient. Being underprepared forces creativity when situations change.

Just build cool stuff and share it is good advice, but it should also be noted that you have to build stuff other people find cool if you want the big gains. But whats cool changes, so dont chase cool, your big gains just might not come when you expect.
