This old line from Stefan Zweig seems tailor-made for AOC's Met Gala message: "Every gesture of resistance which is void of either risk or impact is nothing but a cry for recognition."
@thomaschattwill
This is such a bad criticism of AOC. She's a lawmaker who actually does try to pass policies to tax the rich, it's not just performative.
@thomaschattwill
To be fair though …she is actively supporting (and I think creating) legislation to do the very thing her dress is saying.
This was obviously a stunt for chatter…which it’s clearly achieved. But…she is fighting to walk the walk. 🤷🏻♀️
@thomaschattwill
Except she's in Congress & is affirming a position that's justified considering how little rich pay compared to middle classes. Granted it wld have been both more ideologically daring, but also, I think, more philosophically incontrovertible to say have the Pentagon tax us less!
@thomaschattwill
But all love and respect here….
Wasn’t it just an art fundraiser, at a fancy art gallery, where fancy designers ask famous people to wear their art?
I mean I know she was also trolling but are people overthinking it?
@thomaschattwill
Hey
@thomaschattwill
, should billionaires and multi-billion dollar corporations pay any more in taxes? Instead of talking about how AOC delivered the message let's talk about what actually matters.
@thomaschattwill
"Every gesture of resistance which is void of either risk or impact is nothing but a cry for recognition."
It’s not a line from a book, even if many would suspect the Chess novella, but Stefan Zweig said it in Buenos Aires, at a PEN-conference in 1936.
@thomaschattwill
Thank you for bringing Stefan zweig back to the mind. He is one of the few Germany writers who could ever make German feel like a beautiful language.
