Late to the MATERIALISTS discourse, but it's my firm conviction that these two could've fixed all three of those characters.

The essay above contains thoughts on SIRAT, ALPHA, EDDINGTON, DIE MY LOVE, THE CHRONOLOGY OF WATER and MY FATHER'S SHADOW and others. It was a pleasure and a privilege to write about them all. I'm looking forward to defending ALPHA from the haters for many months to come.

A sensational result for Jafar Panahi, who wins the Palme d'Or. Here's my dispatch from the festival: the drama, the deals, the highlights, and notes on the maddening, addictive job of covering the thing.

Team ALPHA over here. A shattering cinematic experience. The genre trappings and allegory are Ducournau’s mode not motive: this is a story about familial love and grief and the gnawing terror of loss — and my god, Golshifteh Farahani and Tahar Rahim are sensational.

Oh, I can finally talk about MY FATHER’S SHADOW. Beautiful beautiful beautiful. The lyricism of Akinola Davies Jr’s storytelling and the way he presents Lagos on the big screen is thrilling. Dirisu is heartbreaking. A game changer for Nigerian cinema.

Adored DIE MY LOVE. Jennifer Lawrence and Lynne Ramsay was a dream collab on paper, and their commitment to this story of postpartum depression –frenzied, abrasive, often gut-wrenching – is astonishing. Arguably the actor's best work to date.

“Let’s rip off the band aid and watch this f—ing movie.” . Now that’s how you intro a film. Kristen Stewart has leveraged every bit of clout to make THE CHRONOLOGY OF WATER. The results are uncompromising and stingingly raw. Her image making is beautiful. It won’t be her last.

EDDINGTON rips. Small town America painted as a Bosch hellscape of grievances and identity politics, fuelled by the dissolution of truth. Incredibly ambitious — even more so than BEAU — and ripe for misreading. I hope Ari Aster is braced for the storm ahead.
