i'm guessing the show is gonna keep lestat staying illiterate well into adulthood so it could create an interesting contrast if gabriella taught him to speak italian- and had a way of communicating in her own language with her favorite son- but didn't teach him how to read

we know from s1ep2 that lestat's fluent in italian so i wonder if lestat and gabriella used italian as their "private language" in the home that the marquis couldn't understand- similar to the way louis and claudia would use their telepathy to speak without lestat hearing them
