Is negative gearing good for younger generations? Should it be part of our future economic strategy? Definitely not, hey. Our emotions get negatively geared just thinking about it. See Alex's review here: https://t.co/I9cQtHPZQP #tax #auspol24 #PropertyInvestment

Yesterday the Aged Care Taskforce began, and Thomas Walker, our lead economist, was in the thick of the action. We commend the taskforce and the Minister for being so eager to consider the intergenerational impacts of these critical reforms.

A new tax or levy to help fund aged care would further enshrine generational inequality, says Aged Care Minister Anika Wells.

To expect their less-well-off descendants to fund their continued privilege is, well, a bit rich.

Younger generations are being hit hard in this cost of living crisis. Less savings to fall back on and less chance to accumulate wealth over time than previous generations. We need an intergenerational lens in policy making to break the cycle.

The average #HECSdebt increases ~$1,700 today. For many young people, this will outstrip the HECS contribution they make this year. Committing students to debts they will never be able to pay off actively discourages them from education. The system must work better than this.

Today, #HECS debts are increasing massively because of indexation. As if young people donโ€™t have enough on their plates with crises in cost of living, housing, mental health and climate change.

Listening to Jennifer Kulas on @latrobe University's Housing Crisis live panel. "We are preparing for the largest transfer of wealth from one generation to another in the history of the country. Homeownership isn't possible without some kind of intergenerational wealth transfer."

Boomers get free education + a family home + an investment home + tax concession on investment home with negative gearing vs. current students who in 9 days will get an 7.1% increase in their HECS debt of $30,000-$100,000. Sounds fair? ๐Ÿค”

"In short, more indirect taxes, and some taxes applied to wealth rather than income. Without this, stage three fails." Waleed Aly sums up why we need a conversation on tax reform, what do you think? #auspol #Stage3TaxCuts
Tweet card summary image
smh.com.au
The stage three cuts take a system that is more progressive than the OECD average and makes it more regressive. It erodes one of the most enduring principles of Australiaโ€™s tax philosophy.
