A right pair. Authors, gardeners, apocalyptic thinkers, we're growing food when civilisation collapses – or even if it doesn't

"Mulched with gallows humour and ironical banter...shedloads of great advice about how to grow produce...I can see this book taking prize place on the shelves of a new generation of young gardeners." Ah thank you @The_Tablet and @JonathanTulloch! https://t.co/c3IwTifnrz

What individuals like you and I can do to reduce our carbon footprint by 25%, right now, without having to wait for governments and big corporations to act. Though, yeah, they should also get their shit together. 1/3

Nice one! Liking the doublebubble greenhouse/cold frame/carry-caddy thing that’s going on here. Also it’s got nothing to do with our imminent nuclear destruction, which is a bonus.
I don't have a greenhouse on my boat (Funnily enough)...so I use storage boxes. These not only keep your seedlings toasty but they also keep mice and slugs out. Mine have lasted eight years. Don't leave them outside all summer as the UV will weaken them. https://t.co/s1ZCtaGQ3R

This thread just purely makes me happy.
My farm is untidy. Inefficient. Self seeded trees colonise viable field. Blocked drains create wetland. The margins, yard, old veg plots overgrown with hip tall weeds. An orchards is filled with rotting trees. Parts of it can't be access with a tractor...

Imagine walking into Tesco for your weekly shop and finding row after row of nice, tidy, low maintenance shelves but without the food. You and your kids would starve. That's how Bees, Birds, Hedgehogs etc feel when they visit your plastic garden #TimeForTurf #DontBeAnEmptyTescos

Large corporates saying they're "green" because they're filling farmland with monoculture, off-setting trees - we don't buy it. Loss of food-producing land leads to carbon-heavy imports instead. Supporting local, sustainable farms is the better choice.

Lookit this: plants are far less able to "move" their territories as a response to climate change if their local animal populations are decimated. Protecting biodiversity is as important as reducing carbon emissions if any of us are to have a future. https://t.co/M0KCZgupl0

Consumer boycotts work: they forced Barclays to stop its investments in South Africa’s apartheid regime in the 80s.

Toyota, Renault-Nissan, Hyundai-Kia and VW haven’t signed the agreement to sell only zero-emission cars by 2040. They need to think again: consumers should boycott the lot of them. #boycottVW #boycottToyota #boycottHyundai #boycottRenault

.@BorisJohnson #COP26 is coming: time for you to stop saying one thing and doing another. Reject the Cambo drilling permit, and show the world some proper leadership. #BorisStopCambo

Chart of the Day. Possibly chart of the year! 👏👏👏
@peaceo__ Having an allotment, I'm aware of food that's in season. I created a poster for schools showing when veg can be planted/harvested. School lunch should be seasonal, fresh, nutritious & delicious; @cheftonymulgrew delivers that & should be a model for all schools. @JeanetteOrrey

Ah yes! Wouldn't it be great to walk down your street and see the front gardens full of food, instead of parked cars?

Gardening more often is good for you! Unless of course you f*** the tendon in your right elbow using a lump hammer to put in pea supports, switch to hammering with your left hand, then hit the back of your right hand with the lump hammer and drop it on your left foot. #sadbuttrue
Getting your daily dose of Vitamin G is good for you - that’s a fact! Our Wellbeing Fellow @laurianesuyin has been working on a study to test the dose effect of gardening since 2016, discovering that gardening more often leads to greater health benefits. #NationalGardeningWeek

We've got a crush on these joy-inducing visual minutes from Eden Project's Share the Joy of Growing webinar. Brilliant at getting over loads of info - but if you need more, the full grow-your-own advice sesh from us, @Kathryn_Welch_ and Patrick Hosey is at https://t.co/vMn7g1djdW

Oh FFS. You lot might all be at #wetherspoons celebrating the pubs opening, but tonight we will be in our polytunnel (unheated, filled with three months' worth of seedlings), wrapped in four layers of horticultural fleece and gently weeping.
