Can't stop a migrating salt marsh! Building a DEM for Tangier Island and sampling backyard salt marshes last week. Marshes growing out of houses, paint cans, a fire hydrant, and lots of mowed lawns.

"Ditchbanks" are the traditional way of defending rural property from salt water intrusion and #sealevelrise. Photo by Mark Sutton, 1966 in Gloucester, VA. Our emerging research @VIMS_News shows that they slow farmland loss by about 30%.

2nd chapter: published! SLR inundation models often use tidal datums to predict future marsh extent which can drastically over or underestimate future marsh area as salinity, slope, and local factors mediate the elevation of conversion:
