In Minneapolis, people never cared much about how Mike Freeman refused to stand up to sexual violence. Now he's finally gotten everyone's attention as the prosecutor who'd watch his city burn before he'd arrest a rogue cop for murder. Maybe it's time for a closer look.

A five-judge appellate court appears sympathetic to arguments made by Syracuse prosecutors in a public clash with a judge over a tossed child rape case. Judge Stephen Dougherty tossed [the] case and blamed the DA’s office for a “lackadaisical” error.

"In 2016, the National Association to Protect Children (PROTECT) spent tens of thousands of dollars compiling sentencing data from 2007 to 2016 for one state, Minnesota.". Yes we did! And we're not stopping there. Thanks, @WillKrumholz.

Great in-depth article in The Federalist by @WillKrumholz discusses @thesafetytool research, child exploitation task forces, problems in Minnesota, and ideas for citizen action.

(4/4) The 11 members of the Minnesota Sentencing Guidelines Commission have an opportunity and a duty to change these backward practices and take a stand for human rights, children, and survivors. @KellyMitchell40 @abbyhonold @TonjaHonsey @ppschnell.

(3/4) Minnesota also gives probation in child sexual exploitation cases a shockingly high percentage of the time, even for production, which carries minimum prison time of 15 years when prosecuted federally:

(2/4) Minnesota prosecutors choose to charge possession 89% of the time, while prosecutors in other states charge the more serious crime of distribution much more often:

We just reviewed a report by Minnesota’s sentencing commission on how their state response to child sexual exploitation compares to a handful of others. What did the Commission’s data show? (1/4)

Six days, group therapy, and no permanent criminal record. This coach had a cache of video of children as young as 5-6 being horrifically assaulted. Shouldn’t Maryland voters have a way of knowing whether this is common practice for Judge James Bonifant?.

As a fed, Judge Yeakel didn't want to have a "disruptive effect" because, he says, Texas now has a "strong statewide interest in changing" how it handles rape cases.

Despite video evidence, Waco DA Barry Johnson (left) wants to give a man probation for raping a 13-year old then wipe his record clean, a common Texas tradition. Waco Judge Matt Johnson (right) might have a problem with that.

Fair, but accountability isn't working until the finger-pointing starts!. Your advocacy seems far ahead of efforts in the U.S., where very few NGOs are willing to risk angering prosecutors over poor performance. Great to follow U.K. progress.

This ongoing blame game - where the CPS blame the police and the police blame the CPS - can't continue. We aren't going to get proper answers from a report that lacks independence and transparency. The system will carry on failing survivors - then what?.

Pennington County prosecutor Seamus Duffy might have believed he needed to negotiate a plea bargain. But in Minnesota, prices are extremely low. "A stay of adjudication is the most favorable type of sentence in Minnesota. the court does not place a conviction on your record.

2/2 We're not surprised that Minnesota prosecutor Kristen Nelsen battled this case out, when others would have made a sweetheart deal from the get-go and saved the effort. Our transparency tool predicted it. Check it out here:

Probation for these crimes?! At first glance, it’s easy to blame the system. But according to this reporting, prosecutor Kristen Nelson took the case to a Minnesota jury not once, but twice. Then she still didn’t walk away empty-handed. 1/2.
