Qualifying as a solicitor in 1907, he went into partnership with his father in London. The 1911 census records that the family was living in Burnt Oak, Orlestone near Ashford. On the outbreak of war in 1914 Roderic was commissioned into 2/5th Battalion East Kent Regiment, 3/10.

…two further children, both girls. Roderic senior worked as a solicitor in London. Educated at Horris Hill Preparatory School, Roderic went on to Winchester College from 1895-1901. He then undertook a Classics degree at New College, Oxford, graduating with Honours in 1905. 2/10.
