Small functions optimize for local understanding. Yes, it’s easier to reason about smaller functions. But is it really easier to reason about these 100 tiny pieces and how they go together? Nope. Functions come in different shapes and sizes and that’s a good thing.

I can’t find the talk but I remember Rich Hickey saying “Naming is not abstraction” . Often times extracting something to a function is just naming a few lines of code (and naming is HARD!) .And not creating an abstraction.

I first came across the conflicting advice on having “deep classes or deep modules” in John Ousterhout’s talk And I was indignant at first but I have seen the light since then.

I remember reading clean code and agreeing with the sentiment of having super small functions. That was before I did professional development. I have since changed my mind and i don’t think you should extract something to a function just for the sake of it.
