This is a parasternal SHORT axis view. In PEM practice, the probe marker is rotated toward the RIGHT hip, imaging the heart in cross section. The best area to assess function is at the level of the papillary muscles.

In a patient with normal function, we expect the LV and IV septum to squeeze towards each other, ⬇️⬇️the size of the LV cavity by ~50%. Additionally, we expect the mitral valve to slap against the IV septum. These are signs of a 💪💪❤️❤️

This is a parasternal LONG axis view. In our practice (PEM), probe marker is pointed towards the patient's LEFT hip.

Quick tweetorial for our POCUS newbies on assessing ❤️❤️❤️function in kids. PEM docs are pretty good at an 👀assessment of global fxn. Always get 2⃣ views. Normal EF in kids is ~55-75%.

We work in an area with a relatively high incidence of covid-19 (approx 500 new cases/day at the time this pt was seen). Using POCUS improves our management on a day to day basis in the Emergency Center!.

Kiddo w/fever, vomiting & rash. POCUS ⬇️❤️ fxn normal, so fluids given. More labs: troponin & BNP🚩elevated🚩Epi gtt started as BPs not responsive to fluids. Oh BTW: parent +covid 6 wks ago, child asymptomatic. SARS Cov2 IgM/IgG positive. This was MISC! EF on echo 59%
