We show by condensing a non-equilibrium state on surface, otherwise not possible in liquid state, confirmational switching efficiency of azobenzene derivatives can be increases by several folds.

A new class of pyridine-based spiropyran (SP) assembly on surface is switched quantitatively from the SP state to its merocyanine (MC) state by light. Using electrical-field a barrier less reversible switching is induced on single molecules at ambient conditions.
