Public Accounts Committee concerned about the risk of animal disease & ending the badger cull….. #bovinetb #badgercull

Government is not adequately prepared for the most severe animal disease outbreaks.

The replies to this. How out of touch can politicians get?
With devolution, we no longer have to wait for national leaders to rescue us from the cost of living and climate crisis. We're taking bold action ourselves to deliver real change. I'm at @c40cities to push for more work on climate to create jobs, cut bills, and drive growth.

Krebs was tasked in 1996 with advising the Govt on how best to reduce TB in cattle. His advice led to the disease increasing four fold, spreading from a small affected area in the South West. Countless cattle & badgers infected, tax payers money wasted.

That Lord Krebs illustrates the difference between academia & reality is not news to those of us who have been involved with tackling TB over the last thirty years….
Weird intervention from Krebs. Anyone who has ever seen a swift leave or return to a nest will know they don’t have to be 45 metres high! Wherever swift boxes have been introduced the success rate has always been high. This is the tension between academia and reality exposed!

Painted in 1998 by Bradford born David Hockney (1937 - ) the stunning landscape painting ‘Garrowby Hill’ is held by the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston. Garrowby Hill itself is the highest point of the Yorkshire Wolds.

Vet bashing seems to be becoming a national sport. Letter in the Times, from a doctor, I suspect one of the costs includes a consultation fee.

1880 view of the River Aire by John Atkinson Grimshaw (1836-1893) which is still recognisable today. The cast iron Leeds bridge was built between 1870-73. At this time around 55,000 foot passengers crossed the bridge each Saturday

A letter out of the blue, £200 heating allowance. I don’t need it, it will go to charity. But the Govt has had all the flak, weathered it, now backtracked. Spending has to be cut in the upcoming budget, this is amateur politics.

Pet owners are often 'kept in the dark' over bills and prices should be published online, the Competition and Markets Authority says. Martin Coleman, CMA panel inquiry chair, tells #R4Today practices owned by large vet groups charge 16.6% more on average than independent vets.

The stupidity is clear. But it’s more, the arrogance & the lack of care about an issue that impinges heavily on those affected, indeed many other MPs stressed mental health implications, not given a thought.

Farmers & agriculture deserve better from our MPs. In the recent debate an MP, motivated enough to speak (only about ten were) believes sheep are heavily infected with TB & badgers take 5 years to develop TB. Imagine if education or health was dealt so poorly served.

A better link, as I say the speech from Dr Neil Hudson stands out as perhaps the most informed contribution in Parliament ever on this issue….. https://t.co/1bsYNSun9l

As ever, the most important point though is the Ministerial response, which was very closely read from a script suggesting there is a lot of work going on behind the scenes but it’s not our comfort zone. https://t.co/AT1xxkc8BX

Two exceptions, Tim Farron & Neil Hudson. Both contributions well worth reading especially the latter who broadened the issue to cover animal disease resilience as well as the family farm tax. The veterinary expertise was clear & much needed. 2/3

Badger Cull debate yesterday. No Green MP bothered to attend. The depth of knowledge disappointing, a Labour shadow Minister saying she had studied in depth & thinks TB is a virus. The star influence of Brian May & Gatcombe obvious. 1/3
