The slave ship Zong departed the coast of Africa on the 6 of September 1781 with about 442 slaves. Since this human chattel was such a valuable commodity at that time, many captains captured more Africans than their ships could accommodate in order to maximize profits.

Children, women and men were forced off the ship and left to drown. Some of the men handcuffed and had iron balls tied to their ankles. About 10 Africans jumped rather than be pushed by the crew. By December 22, about 208 Africans arrived alive, a mortality rate of 53%

Upon the Zong’s arrival in Jamaica, James Gregson, the ship’s owner, filed an insurance claim for their loss. Gregson stated that Zong didn’t have enough water to sustain the crew & Africans.The underwriter, Thomas Gilbert, disputed the claim citing the ship did have enough water

Countries like Jamaica would find themselves in hot water with international powers as well because they aided in the invasion of Grenada. Under the orders of PM Edward Seaga, the Jamaica Defence Force, the JDF, was deployed on Grenada to aid the US in the invasion.

Maurice Bishop seized power in March of 1979 at the end of Grenadian Revolution replacing Sir Eric Gairy as PM. Bishop would then developed relations with Cuba. On October 19 of 1983, Bishop was killed by a firing squad. Up to this day, the remains of his body is unknown

On the 14th of October 1968, the Cabinet invited the Vice- Chancellor of UWI, Phillip Sherlock, to terminate Rodney's contract of employment. The Vice-Chancellor informed the Government that this was not possible since there were no professional grounds for Rodney's dismissal.

The aircraft which brought Rodney back from Montreal where he was attending a Congress of Black Writers landed at 2:20 PM on Tuesday 15th October. Stranded on the plane, Rodney worried over his pregnant wife, Pat, their unborn child & his young child who were all in Jamaica

Phillip Sherlock stated that he will discuss the matter with his senior colleagues. But Sherlock was denied that time as Shearer banned Rodney the following day saying it was urgent to do so. It would seem a perfect time in Shearer’s eyes as Rodney was out the country.

The aircraft which brought Rodney back from Montreal where he was attending a Congress of Black Writers landed at 2:20 PM on Tuesday 15th October. Stranded on the plane, Rodney worried over his pregnant wife, Pat, their unborn child & his young child who were all in Jamaica.

The plane went down killing 57 Cubans which included 24 members of the 1975 national Cuban fencing team that had just won all the gold medals in the Central American & Caribbean Championships; many of them teenagers. There were also 11 Guyanese & five North Koreans on board.

Today marks the 43rd anniversary of the 1979 Grenadian Revolution, the first & only successful revolution in the Anglophone Caribbean. It saw the socialist People's Revolutionary Government, born out of the Marxist-Leninist New Jewel Movement, coming to power.

Today on October 10, 1997, the film Dancehall Queen, starring Audrey Reid was released in Jamaican cinemas. At the time of its release, it was the highest grossing local film & still up to today, one of the few Jamaican films with a woman lead Thread about the film is below

Nearly 20 of these troops were killed & over a hundred wounded; over 60 Grenadan troops and Cuban milita on the islands to aid in the expansion of the island m’s airport were killed. The government collapsed & was replaced by one acceptable to the United States .

Today, we remember the victims on Cubana Airlines Flight 455 traveling from Barbados to Jamaica that was brought down on October 6, 1976, by a bomb attack. The plane explosion is the first act of midair terrorism in the Americas. A brief synopsis of the event is below.

Still during the actual invasion of 1983, US forces had to rely on minimal intelligence about the situation. (The maps used by them were, old tourist maps of the island.) Reagan ordered in more troops & by the time the fighting was done, nearly 6,000 U.S. troops were in Grenada.
