Record label Luaka Bop is reporting the death of the great saxophonist Pharoah Sanders at age 81—a tremendous loss of a major innovator. Sanders’s last album for the label, Promises (2021) was widely cited, by myself and others as one of the finest jazz recordings of the decade.
