We're delighted to share that @educationgovuk has announced they will continue to fund the NELI Programme for thousands of schools in England until 2029.

LanguageScreen assessments can be used to track development in children’s oral language skills as they move up the school. Why not share these reports with the Year 1 teachers they are joining next year. The individual pupil pages can also be shared with parents, if you wish.

Recapping at the end of the lesson helps children to retain and retrieve their knowledge. It helps reflect on what they have learnt and their own contribution to the lesson. 🤩🚀

Assessing with LanguageScreen at the end of the year is a valuable. If you don't have time to assess your whole class, we recommend assessing the children who received NELI plus the 5 to 10 children who scored just higher than them on LanguageScreen at the beginning of the year.

In the NELI programme, the teachers encourage the children to use connective and sequencing words to organise their thoughts, link ideas, and construct coherent narratives. Repeated modelling helps cement the children's understanding and ability to apply these language skills.

In addition to boosting the children's expressive language development, NELI also aims to improve their receptive language skills with focus on listening. This balanced approach targeting both listening and speaking skills, is crucial for supporting overall oral language growth.
