@TransitionZero By being ‘greener’ you can also be more secure and more flexible and resilient, so it’s a win-win (including cost saving!)

@TransitionZero There are ways to improve your impacts, such as carbon awareness. This means running more intensive software processes when the grid is greenest.

@TransitionZero There is huge value in being open about tech, data, and projects. It creates improved tools and info when others scrutinise and contribute,

@TransitionZero Optimising a little internal tool might have a small impact but optimising open source has HUGE potential. 80% of software today relies on some open source dependencies. Can you create sustainable defaults in the same way we previously made things secure by default?

@TransitionZero We can usually improved things across multiple metrics (not just carbon reduction) by thinking smarter.

@TransitionZero The UN SDGs (sustainable development goals) are linked to the environmental impact of tech in so many ways. This includes things like the fast fashion of devices and the energy used to cool AI data centres

@TransitionZero Now listening to Oliver Cronkite of Scott Logic about sustainable technology and open source. The way we use digital tools uses energy ALL the time. It’s like going to bed and leaving all your lights on in the house.

@TransitionZero They have dynamic perimeters in their model (eg cost of oil or solar panels) they can include predictions based on some costs coming down/going up

@TransitionZero And allowing researchers to set their own questions based on their own data as well as the data that Transition Zero holds - including predictions! This is important because energy modelling has always been expensive and time consuming, but they are making it cheaper and easier.

@TransitionZero Here’s an example of one of the visualisations that they have created, showing the solar PV is the energy production tech with the biggest rise and where they think it will go.

@TransitionZero That have #FOSS repos on GitHub that are ready for people to use and the data is already in there for people to make their own visualisations of the data.
