NEW RESEARCH The amount of data from PSATs affects movement reconstruction. For #bluefin #tuna and @Tags4Wildlife GPE3 & PSATs >30% is required. This will vary between applications, and we provide a framework for assessing how much data is enough... -> https://t.co/bQfEzemwD3

1) What a wonderful day of wildlife watching near Plymouth. To learn why the incredible bluefin tuna have migrated to UK seas and also much more, read this thread. It is vital to understand the reason for their recent appearance. See 2

T-minus 10 days until our satellite tags on tope sharks are due to pop off! 🦈Any guesses where these large females may have ventured to from the Wicklow Coastline in the last six months? πŸ€”

PROGRAMMING MATTERS! If it’s a track you want, then ignore all the other marvelous things a PSAT can be programmed to do (goes for other data types, too). The more data a tag has to transmit, the less likely you will get the amount you need.

By comparing complete geolocation datasets (i.e. 100% of data) with partial datasets (e.g. 10% of data) we found that at least 30% of data was required for reliable track reconstructions using the GPE3. Below this, differences of more than 2,000 km were observed (shown below).

Generally speaking, the longer PSATs transmit their data post-release, the more data is recovered. The reality is that researches will be faced with a spread of received data volumes for different tags (as we were, shown in the plot)

Pop-up satellite archival tags (PSATs) are great bits of kit, but not infallible. They are required to be small, work in a hostile environment and operate over a large gradient of satellite reception (highest at the poles). The result – partial datasets.

⚠️⚠️ Innovasea has moved to encrypt their coding schemes to ensure that their tags can only be detected by their receivers. Imagine if Apple decided that iPhone users could only call other iPhone users? You could no longer call your friend who owns an Android. Important thread πŸ‘‡

Yesterdays recapture of double tagged ABT was a 2021 release in Port Hood, πŸ‡¨πŸ‡¦ The sat tag track 2021-2022 went to the Gulf of Mexico. The fish was a female spawning there! We have her earbones now and we will get her age & the minerals laid down will tell us where she was born!!
