Winter is for waterfowl! With many species now wearing their bright breeding plumage and practicing courtship displays in anticipation of spring, waterfowl often steal the show in our aviaries during these quiet, colder months.

Friday Feather Fact: Flamingos can spend up to 30% of their day preening their feathers, but all of that work is essential for survival. Preening keeps feathers clean and waterproof to aid in thermoregulation, and enhances their vibrant colors to help attract a mate.

When the pair continued to show dedicated nesting and incubation behavior, our aviculturists swapped their infertile eggs with eggs from the large ibis flock in the South America aviary, and the new moms are now successfully raising two healthy chicks!

We have a new family of Scarlet Ibis in the Landing Zone! This spring, two pair-bonded females built a nest together and laid eggs, but the eggs were infertile and would not have hatched.

Ross’s Geese nest and raise their goslings in the Arctic tundra, then undertake a migration of more than 2,500 miles to winter in central California and the southern U.S. Small numbers of Ross’s Geese do occur in NC each winter, usually mixed in with large flocks of Snow Geese.

This Ross’s Goose knows how to handle the hot summer weather: drink plenty of water and find a shady spot! Ross’s Geese are smaller relatives of the Snow Goose, though they are less common than their larger cousins.

This red, white, and blue bird is a Blue Eared Pheasant, named for the white facial plumes that look like ears. Found in mountainous areas of central China, they feed on berries, insects, and vegetation. Eared pheasants are monomorphic, meaning males and females look the same.
