My doctoral thesis is now available online. It covers a lot of ground! Very briefly I look at how early prevention sciences are used in child protection practice and policy in Aotearoa and I detail racist/classist/sexist consequences.

I’m not posting here anymore. At all. But I’ll placehold this account. I was already reducing my presence. When people tell you who they are, believe them.

Fundraising to help my pretty amazing daughter represent NZ at the Globe (in London) in July this year. She's running an ultramarathon (sort of!) and seeking sponsors to help her walk the boards. Any help more than appreciated (especially in this climate!)

Government grinches are back to take your Santa parades, ANZAC commemorations, water quality programmes, funds for pest and weed removal, major events, grants for sports clubs, new libraries, support for business associations etc. If that’s incorrect, then what do they mean?

Marsden fund will no longer fund any social science or humanities research. This is unfettered fetishisation of science and incredibly narrow minded. It’s worshipping at the altar of supposedly objective western science. https://t.co/Ii8aPsZxRb

All policies like this do is responsibilise parenting (mothering) and deresponsibilise government and state responsibility for structural neglect of children and families through poverty, colonisation, and misogyny. End of rant (but I'm still seething).

Focusing on telling Mums to improve parenting practices, focus on building their kids brains, and not being depressed. I can guarantee you that every single mother in this country knows she needs to do this, knows she must sacrifice herself on the altar of perfect mothering.

And apparently I'm not done, I'm enraged that we are back here again. Look at this, from the policy. These are their focus areas. All of this will fall on mothers the hardest. All of it. I tell you what does make the biggest difference in the first 2000 days? Decent incomes.

And returning to what I said about social investment the last time around, see here:
theconversation.com
Social investment policy involves intervening early to reduce the cost to the state from at-risk groups. But a purely fiscal approach to social welfare ignores the systemic causes of poverty and need.

Anyway if you want to see the actual policy see here. It's simply a rehashed version of every child welfare policy the Nats had in the 2010s, it's boring and predictable.

It's stressful, and you might be faced with the choice of a poor paying job where you have to 'neglect' your child or being able to pay rent. A ridiculous choice right. So who, I repeat is neglecting these children?
