Live AB's against some LMU lions! Very appreciative for them having me. Always a good day when you’re creating whiffs with every pitch in the arsenal. Starting pitcher still looking for the right winter ball spot 💪.@FlatgroundApp

It’s sounds simple, because it is, but the connotation of this phrase in my mind kept me in an aggressive/“hard focus”mindset on executing and competing against the hitter first and foremost.

However, through experience, and the development of a cutter, I naturally began to find a more detailed/“hard focus” of still trying to beat the hitter instead of battling myself. The thought process was just to “generate weak contact”/or beating the hitter’s barrel to a spot.

I’d played with the idea of “throwing to contact” in the past, but the idea was too generalized of a concept in my mind, which would lead to a “soft focus” where I’d still miss big or throw a cookie and get burned.

“Nice and smooth, just get it in the box” I’d tell myself, or if that wasn’t working I’d tell myself “still let it eat!” Which typically also wouldn’t work. Mentally, I didn’t know how to stay the aggressor without trying to induce a whiff.

2) Mindset: Often when I’d fall behind, the last thing I’d want to do is walk the hitter, so I began to play the game against myself, instead of competing against the batter.

This is why developing a cutter and slider with higher zone % was crucial for me.

1) Pitch arsenal: I became one dimensional when I’d fall behind, because I’d solely rely on my fastball to get back into counts. If for some reason I didn’t want to give in, I’d still have to rely on a low zone % off-speed pitch which often would lead to walks.

Then, I began to start mid season which most likely hurt my stats, but definitely expedited my redevelopment as a pitcher.
