DIRT
Steve always starts a game with 18 blocks of dirt in his inventory.
Dirt is the cheapest material, meaning it is first prioritized whenever making blocks, rails for minecart, and TNT. Steve CANNOT make crafting tables with dirt.

▪︎ 12½ blocks of dirt per TNT
Steve will sometimes have ½ block of dirt remaining in his inventory. The only way to get rid of it is to place rails or TNT.

Depending on the stage, dirt blocks may be replaced with wool, sand, or ice blocks. The only legal stage that uses a different block type is Yoshi's Story.
Steve can mine dirt on the legal stages Battlefield, Small Battlefield, Final Destination, Yoshi's Story (platforms).

i think it's actually important to study ledge grabboxes for stuff like this. there's an entire section on this on Ultimate Frame Data that nobody bothers to take a look at, but this could seriously be helpful in learning how to deal with Steve blocks offstage
Had a couple people ask me about how Gluto could have lived the block edgeguard
Most characters are able to snap to ledge from the side of the block while riding the wall only works for a few

Wood is the second cheapest material, meaning it is second after dirt to make blocks, rails, and TNT. It is first priority for making crafting tables. It is last priority for crafting and repairing tools.
