I'm very excited to announce that I have accepted a position as an Assistant Professor of Sociology
@UofIllinois
beginning in the fall! It's been a long road to get here, and I'm beyond thrilled to be joining this amazing department and university!
So excited to have just learned that I won the ASA Sociology of Law Distinguished Book Award for my book Sorting Sexualities: Expertise and the Politics of Legal Classification!!!
@ASAnews
@SocLawSection
Conditional accept at Social Problems! Take that soc elitists who faulted me for not having a generalist pub when I was on the market (and don't even get me started on how bad a measure that is of quality work)!
Finally got that "conditional" removed from my acceptance at
@socprobsjournal
! Be on the lookout for "Classification and Coercion: The Gendered Punishment of Transgender Women in Immigration Detention" w/ my awesome co-author
@LaRocioRosales
.
A nationally representative survey of ~800 LGBTQ+ (and ~700 non-LGBTQ+) people and now 52 in-depth interviews with LGBTQ+ people on their experiences with and views of police.
#Policingtherainbow
is about to queer the hell out of policing research.
How appropriate that the day I start getting attacked online, my article on tech-facilitated abuse of LGBTQ people comes out. The upshot is LGBTQ people face more TFA, and now we have nationally representative data showing it.
So excited that my article w/
@LaRocioRosales
"Classification and Coercion: The Gendered Punishment of Transgender Women in Immigration Detention" is now online
@socprobsjournal
! 🧵
Excited to find out today that my team and I
@NORCNews
won a grant to study the social ecological context of hate crimes reporting among LGBTQ+ communities! Vital questions as hate crimes against queer and trans people (esp of color) are on the rise.
My last

tweet comes to you from my Uber on the way to the airport. Thank you
@SocLawSection
for this wonderful honor! See all you beautiful people
@ASAnews
in Philly next year!
So excited to share our first publication from
#PolicingtheRainbow
in
@contextsmag
. We found that LGBTQ+ people are considerably more likely to label the police as foe than non-LGBTQ+ people, but there are some caveats! Take a look; it's open access!
Super excited to get to share my preliminary work on queer pathways to incarceration
@ASAnews
on the "Intersectionality in Crime, Law and Deviance" panel! See you all in August!
@KateHeeChoi
As a first-gen student myself, I would approach this as a lack of cultural capital and use it as an opportunity to have a conversation about what motivated them to ask that question. I’m gonna bet they didn’t know to look at your CV, learn about your work, etc
Great thread. And I would add one more thing that I've noticed--universities offering access to quant software and not qual analysis software. That is a huge disservice to all qual scholars but esp grad students, postdocs, and other precarious folks.
I considered quitting grad school during my 1st-year research methods seminar.
Why? It was taught by a quantitative scholar who had limited qualitative research knowledge.
The teaching reflected that, trying to push quant logics onto qual projects.
It was demoralizing.
Today in casual homophobia in sociology: reviewer from my rejected NSF grant argues that anti-LGBTQ laws do not expose LGBTQ people to negative social attitudes. I think trans kids in TX would have something to say about that.🙄
One of my manuscripts has been under review for almost 7 months b/c the journal is "waiting on a review." Fellow reviewers: do not sit on a review for 7 months. If you don't have the time, say no.
At this point, pull the paper or hope it comes thru soon??
You know when you've been marinating in data forever, and things finally start coming into focus? Love those moments, and we're finally getting there with my queer policing project 😊
Come hear about some of my new work on queer pathways to incarceration at the Intersectionality in Crime, Law & Deviance panel at 10am tomorrow! The session is gonna be 🔥

Y'all,
#Policingtherainbow
has a logo, and the font is modeled after the old vertical sign that used to hang above the Stonewall Inn. AND the font is named Marsha after Marsha P. Johnson. I think our designer got it right! Website debuting later this year!
My book
#SortingSexualities
was reviewed in Choice, but so far all I can see is this: "A complex, captivating exploration of sexual identity and the law...This is a truly fascinating and eye-opening book, richly researched and engaging...Highly recommended"
Check out the new Q&A about my book Sorting Sexualities from
@UChicagoPress
. And keep the book in mind as you plan your classes this year. I'm happy to come talk to your class!
In his new book, SORTING SEXUALITIES, Stefan Vogler deftly unpacks the politics of the techno-legal classification of sexuality in the US. On our blog, we ask him a few questions about what this means:
Well, it's happened: I've pissed off the crazies with my tweet about how many of my students are queer and am now being branded a pedophile. You'd think they could get some new material.
Illinois is home to the second largest university library collection in the United States.
Holding more than 14 million volumes, the Main Library was added to the U.S. National Register of Historic Places.
I will never not celebrate queer people being in spaces they have historically been excluded from. And haters, just know that you’re giving me great data for my next article.
As I keep seeing newer books get reviewed, I can’t help but wonder if
#SortingSexualities
hasn’t been reviewed by a single sociology journal simply bc I’ve been situated outside of (adjacent to, really) academia for the last 3 years 🤔
#elitism
My latest article co-authored w/ my amazing mentee is now officially out in LSI. We show how courts' failure to account for queer women's intersectional identities and vulnerabilities results in low success rates for asylees.
Even though AJS probably still carries more "prestige," I'm going to take it as a point of pride that my latest article is published in a higher impact journal
@socprobsjournal
Academic hivemind: If you were going to teach a course on research methods in sexualities research, what would you pick? Other: Please Specify is at the top of my list. But so many good things to choose from...

@hebagowayed
Don't know that agree here. Plenty of students will NEVER ask even if they would like to. I definitely agree that the prof should take the backseat and always allow the mentee to be first author though.

One of those days where I managed to eek out like 50 words, and I'm completely mentally exhausted. This article may be written 50 words at a time, but damnit, it will get written!

@jeffguhin
I was told by more than one hiring committee member that I was hurt by a lack of soc pubs even though I had pubs in flagship area journals (law & society review and gender & society), so I tend to think they want the soc journals.
@hebagowayed
Agreed that students are the powerless party here, but many wouldn't ask bc they don't know they can or should
#firstgen
. But also totally agree that it should be "I'm open to collaborating," not "Let me coauthor this paper w/ you."

students: straight talk. Veiled references and whisper networks only benefit the people with the needed social capital. You shouldn’t need to be connected to know about a predatory mentor, etc.

Sending love to other sociologist book writers who released their first book since ASA 2019, who are missing out on seeing their book on display in the exhibit hall. It may be a minor thing compared to whatever else we’ve been grieving, but it’s a thing, nonetheless.
Trying to find affordable senior housing for my mom, and everyplace has years long waitlists. We need actual, available affordable housing now! Come on, Democrats, do something!
Grad Students: You NEED to publish. But you NEED to do so in top journals. I routinely see grad CVs with 4-5 publications, but in small journals. And I think… Great, but they must have a small mind. One publication at a top journal is far better than five in low-impact venues.
"these policies were frequently undermined by an organizational culture that fails to respect detainees’ gender identities"
Exactly what I argue in my recent article in
@socprobsjournal
Hi! As we speak:
- the ceo of tiktok is being interrogated by congress with intent to ban TikTok in America
- anti lgbtqia legislation is being passed banning gender affirming health care & drag shows
- Jim Crow era laws are being reinstated in Mississippi
ASA Sexualities folks (or sociologists who want to be us or be with us), our reception is SATURDAY night with drag performances by Isadora Spreads (bring that money honey!) and lots of book giveaways for grad students and first time attendees!! See you there!

We won't start having results for several more months, but it's a mixed methods study that will produce the first nationally representative probability-based study of these issues in the LGBTQ community. Very exciting!
@drcompton
We conducted our own survey using NORC’s AmeriSpeak Panel. Glad to talk more about it if you ever wanna! We’ll be making the survey publicly available soon too!
