Imagine fleeing danger, arriving alone—and being told you must pay more than $5,000 for a chance at safety. This is what the budget bill demands of unaccompanied children. This is not justice. Help us fight back. Donate today:

The Senate just passed a budget bill that could make life even harder for unaccompanied kids. New policies target families with high fees & immigration checks. We must protect these children by any means.

Last week, KIND joined @refugees, @SEstadoMigr & @Accem_ong to call for expanded, dignified pathways for family reunification. Every unaccompanied and separated child has the right to be with their family—family unity must be protected. #CRCP2025.

KIND condemns the Senate’s budget bill for gutting protections for unaccompanied children. It fast-tracks deportations, removes safeguards, and puts kids at greater risk of trafficking and abuse. This is not policy—it’s cruelty. Our full statement:

The U.S. is deporting immigrant children it already recognized as abused or abandoned. A new USCIS policy strips SIJ youth of protection while they wait for visas, sending them back into harm.

The bill would impose an $8.5K minimum fee on sponsors of unaccompanied children—far beyond the reach of many potential sponsors, including parents, who could offer safe homes, especially with other massive fees included.

Families are being torn apart again. ICE is separating families in the U.S. at courthouses, during raids, and in “wellness checks.”. Children—including U.S. citizens—are being taken not for safety, but due to enforcement. We can’t let this happen again.

A federal court just halted the government from applying these changes to certain children still in ORR’s care--helping to ensure they will not face arbitrary delays or denials of reunification with loved ones or other suitable sponsors.

These changes have disrupted reunifications of children with parents and other family members, prolonged detention, and threatened to leave children without sponsors and potentially more vulnerable to trafficking and exploitation.
