A placebo needs to be as close as possible to the substance being studied so one can be sure that the active agent is really what you’re analyzing, not one of the other ingredients.

IDK who’s going to see this that doesn’t know, but placebo-control studies are only ethical if there is clinical equipose - you don’t have concrete evidence the thing will likely work already
