Worried about climate but unsure what to do? Let me show you how simply I live with no electricity, gas, oil or a car. Growing my food and firewood. Keeping chickens. This life can be really harmonious! .Just to give you ideas, not preaching ❤️

Nowadays when I grow most of my food, I rarely cook according to a recipe. I use what I have at hand and get creative. Found some chanterelles on may way to swimming. Broccoli and kale are starting to ripen. Tomato season produces tiny red sweeties.dug some tiny potatoes up, too

Last week I was eating bucketfuls of peas. Now it is tomato time! Of course, I do preserve a portion, but it is quite nice to just walk into the garden to eat.

Sometimes I wonder if all gardening effort is unnecessary? I prepare the soil, spread ash and fertiliser, lovingly plant potatoes at just the right intervals, water and weed. But this is my compost heap. A rotten potato has decided to start growing all on its own with no help!!

One of the best treats you can give to chickens: "spoiled" milk.

Peas are a great keeper. You can dry them and store at room temperature or chilled or even in a shed that freezes. They store for years as long as they stay dry. Talk about self-sufficiency!.

Pea leaves taste really great, and the flowers are sweet and delicious. You can eat the whole pod, or just take the peas out. .

Peas are a great vegetable. Easy to grow, can be eaten fresh from the bush or dried to last an eternity. Pea soup tastes great and is packed with protein. Chickens love it too, so they get the leftovers. Growing peas even fertilisrs the soil!

I am drying milkweed Chamaenerion angustifolium) for the chickens. They like it in the summer, but in our harsh winters they go crazy when given some dried greens!

My chicks devouring a potato with mother hen guarding the party. Actually it was the rooster that invited the chicks to eat. I gave the flock potatoes to their treat bowl, and the placed two into the run for chicks - otherwise they wouldn't get any.

Do not get into flood water. It has sewage and other pollutants. After every flood, there are epidemics of diarrhea.

Look at your surroundings. Do not stay in a valley. City streets are valleys too! .

First: if heavy rains are predicted, do not go into any place underground. No subway. No underground parking. No cellars. No shopping center low levels.

Second trip to the washing station. See, how I can wash my rugs without owning a car, having electricity or piped water? Life works even when it is simple and modest.

Traditional rugs are quite narrow; that makes them easy to roll and bring out for shaking. In the winter I throw them into the snow, which cleans and disinfects them nicely. So I have clean rugs even without electricity ❤️.

Vigorous brushing and lots of rinsing! There is a squeezer to help you extract excess water from the rugs after they have been washed and rinsed. The rugs were still pretty heavy when I loaded them on the bike for the trip back home.
