Think about this for a moment. Our government is deporting people not for criticism of America but for criticism of a foreign government. It's hard to overstate just how absurd this is.
That the Trump administration would target someone as careful and cautious as Mahmoud Khalil was precisely the point. They wanted to send the message that even the most standard criticisms of Israel could get you kicked out of the country.

@shadihamid I think the apparent fact that he was likely an "agent" of non-US agitators sort of kills this case for me. No rando has dozen or more high powered legal teams on the speed-dial BEFORE arrest. My take? He was an asset. He'll be fine. He can agitate back home in Syria.

@jasonwkim Hmm fascinating, do you have any evidence he was an “agent”? If so, I’m sure the US government would love to know because even they haven’t asserted that

@shadihamid @jasonwkim This is the wrong standard. All the U.S. has to do is determine he was a pain in the ass and they don't want him in the country. And he was clearly a pain in the ass.

@steveplotnicki @shadihamid @SecRubio made that determination. He was clearly within his legal rights to do so.

@jasonwkim @steveplotnicki @shadihamid @SecRubio You should stick to software engineering. You clearly know nothing about first amendment legal rights.

@iliveindc @jasonwkim @shadihamid @SecRubio The First Amendment is not a defense in a deportation proceeding.

@iliveindc @jasonwkim @shadihamid @SecRubio 100% correct. It's a defense to criminal charges but not deportation.
