My connection: my tutor at university was Dick Grimsdale who built the world's first transistorised computer, and was himself a tutee of Turing. I later worked in Turing's old department writing software for the 5th computer in the line of computers Turing worked on.

Today is the 70th anniversary of Turing's death, suicide after being chemically castrated for being gay, at that time a criminal offence, thus depriving the world of one of its greatest mathematicians and computer scientists.
