'One in six autistic pupils have not attended school since September.' 62% reported this was due to mental health issues. One of the key causes reported was "strict rules for minor issues (&) rigid school uniform policies." These approaches don't suit SEND kids. Or any child.

PS: the writer of this piece is Sam Sharp, of the notorious MAT Gorse Academies (in the news last year for its brutal isolation policies). The Freudian slip in his LinkedIn post is quite remarkable...👇 (via @stevenmwright)

@stevenmwright I wrote about Gorse and the isolation legal case last year: https://t.co/D9EhueA9QN
The case involved the "repeated isolation" by John Smeaton Academy of 3 children aged 12-14. In a year when 31% of pupils were isolated, one girl spent 83 days isolated & 14 days suspended, and an austistic boy spent 39% of the year isolated/ suspended. ⬇️ https://t.co/SBgGoYnYM0

@joel120193 1) The sanction is ineffective in modifying behaviour; 2) it damages pupils, families and schools; 3) there are sensible alternatives; 4) some MATs have abused their freedom to exclude, like this one...

So Bom Tennett & his OBoE Orchestra's behaviour hubs programme didn't move the needle but DID reveal what every military, sport, business leader has known forever - you get more out of people by motivating positively, not punishing the soul out of them

The latest knee-jerk from @educationgovuk : "Keep suspended pupils in school, ministers say". Yet schools <already have internal suspensions>. And there are some very clear issues here around how 'suspension-not-suspensions' are managed. Some questions to resolve... 1/6

In most walks of life, we make it a practice to listen to the victims. There's a dark stain on the names & reputations of too many people in education, who dismissed these voices just because this story inconveniences their ideology. These were kids. https://t.co/I5qqDQRdVT

Oh look, @BristolCouncil playing the SEND blame game too. Maybe if you got your house in order, sorted out education, inclusion & meeting legal obligations through the full value chain, kids would have to travel miles in taxis? Just a thought.

Just back from attending NEU demostration at DfE, over situation at Arthur Terry Learning Trust, with its 20%-plus topslice for central services. Can't recall seeing quite so much anger from teachers as in this case. Group made a lot of noise while handing in letter of concern.

Gary asked my wife who would he live with when we die? 😭 This broke our hearts. He has been thinking about this. My wife said that his sister would make sure he would ok. He asked, what if she doesn’t want to? 😭😭😭

Does anyone else remember Great Minds Together and their bid to become the national group SEND Resolution? They were supported by several MPs. Worth a read given new calls for a national #SEND body. https://t.co/yoklJgQlz1
