Hopefully also soon to be found in a paper near you!.
@TerrEcol_NIOO's own @steven_degoede demonstrates the effects of #tree thinning rate on #forest soil fungal communities! #EcM do not like losing their #hosts!

Never properly closed this, as I went on a trip to Ouarzazate and Ait Ben Haddou to get an extra taste of #Morocco - the Atlas Mountains are beautiful! I will always remember the energy and enthusiasm of prof Joann Whalen and all the friendly people I've met #SOM2024! [6/6]
During the #SOM2024 closing ceremony, it has just been announced that the 10th edition of the SOM symposium will be in Sao Paolo, Brazil 🇧🇷 @usponline in July 2026. First time in Latin America, proudly organized by professor Mauricio Cherubin. [5/n]

Next, an underwhelming keynote by Rattan Lal, who was sadly also not present #SOM2024. He still shows the promise of proper land and soil management for C sequestration and improving soil health, but it was mostly (slightly outdated) soil science 101. [3/n]

Good start of the day with #SOM2024 keynote by @louisschipper. He brings us to #NewZealand & its national soil monitoring system. Soil C not really a concern for soil quality, but of course every ton in the soil counts & framework helps w/ finding best #mitigation practices [2/n]

Final day of #SOM2024 in Ben Guerir. People still looking fresh after the gala dinner of last night, with a wonderful 'magical Arabian nights' theme. We got a hint of traditional Moroccan dance, music and entertainment, although they could have left the snakes 🐍 home IMHO [1/n]

@KirstenbCNP @XiaojuanFeng @usponline Final talk of the day, the great @Karenmmr317 enthusiastically talking about temperature sensitivity of soil carbon. She shows a consistent weird trend of respiration across European soil samples at higher T - different processes seem to take over. Nice discussion followed [6/6]

@KirstenbCNP @XiaojuanFeng @usponline Lucas Bento giving a great talk during #SOM2024. He shows #carbon stocks in degraded Brazilian pastures can be restored by going from extensive cattle grazing to a managed system with intermediate intensity #grazing without irrigation. [5/n]

@KirstenbCNP Very interesting talk by @XiaojuanFeng about MAOM formation in wetlands, something not often discussed. #Sphagnum mosses seem to increase the availability of metal oxides by producing phenolic acids, and then enhance the formation of metal-organic associations. [4/n].

After overcoming technical difficulties w/ ballroom dancing, @KirstenbCNP gave a vibrant talk on the other #carbon. Inorganic carbon is to be taken seriously in most parts of the world, and will interact with SOC and biota. Climate change may only increase its importance. [3/n]

Very inspiring talk by @BruceHungate about the quantification of the soil microbial processes with stable isotope probing (love this 😍) and -omics approaches. Great artwork to help with this complicated topic, and nice bridges between science and the arts. [2/n]

Starting day 3 #SOM2024 with @CorneliaRumpel talking about the role of earthworms 🪱 in SOM formation. As many areas have a #earthworm biomass of a couple of cows belowground (!), their role in SOM dynamics may be significant, but their casts may not form very stable carbon [1/n]

Lastly, happy to catch the talk of @ashish_a_malik. He introduced us to the YAS framework and showed that #grassland #microbial communities help to accrue more #SOM, while in croplands they help deplete it. In the latter they are likely more attuned to resource acquisition.[4/4]
