My latest @CostsOfWar research, out today, shows that the widespread myth in the US that the so-called "war on terror" is over could not be further from the truth.

Nine months later, 232,000 indirect deaths does not seem like an unreasonable figure, but rather a conservative one. Counting war deaths is always tricky, but attempting to grasp the scale of the human costs of war is essential. [END].

One year into the violence, @CostsOfWar research highlighted an October 2, 2024 letter to President Biden from a group of U.S. physicians estimating that 62,413 people in Gaza had already died of starvation. [8/9]

Given the scale of Israel's attacks on infrastructure and widespread malnourishment in Gaza, we need to contemplate the possibility of an even higher ratio, taking 232,000 as a minimum estimate of indirect deaths. [7/9].

In my study I used the Geneva Declaration Secretariat's average ratio of 4:1 indirect to direct deaths. Applying this to Gaza since Oct. 2023, if the direct death toll is 58,000, that could mean an additional 232,000 current and/or future indirect deaths, totaling 290,000. [6/9].

Leaving aside the question of the intentionality of warring parties (a debated issue), a shorthand could be direct deaths = from bombs, bullets, etc.; indirect deaths = non-immediate deaths from causes like starvation [4/9].

These are epidemiological terms: While "direct deaths" are due directly to war violence, "indirect deaths" are due to reverberating effects of war like malnutrition and the destruction of healthcare facilities. [3/9]

According to a pivotal study by the Geneva Declaration Secretariat in 2008, the burden of "indirect deaths" for the majority of conflicts since the early 1990s has been between three to 15 times the number of "direct deaths." [2/9].

I wrote a study on “indirect deaths” in the post-9/11 wars—those deaths that continue long after bombs are dropped. Here’s what my analysis brings to bear on analyzing the death toll in Gaza since Oct. 7, 2023. [THREAD].

Wait a minute, the US is making war plans in Yemen??!! This question is glaringly absent from most if not all the US news coverage of the Signal chat leak. This shock should be equally as important as the national security breach. The US is killing innocent people in Yemen.
