New episode alert! Download it to hear about… the 40 year-olds who get sent to bed at 5pm. Just one example of the way some people with learning disabilities may be treated as they get older. Plus Labour’s Marie Tidball on being a newbie disabled MP 🎧

🦾Non-disabled people feel better represented by non-disabled candidates - suggesting that disability is a relevant political identity to them as well. 🦾This means: we need more disabled politicians so that disabled people feel represented and not excluded from politics. (3/3).

🦾This feeling is strongest for those who identify with the disability community, but also exists among those who don't. 🦾The representative link cannot be fully explained by assumed shared preferences - disabled people value descriptive representation in and of itself. (2/3).

"It is almost as if many Germans get their best laugh when the power dynamics of their daily realities are simply reproduced in the form of a joke, instead of being challenged or inverted." So true!.

➡️When ideology perceptions are held constant or candidates’ party affiliations revealed, voters *don't* penalise disabled candidates. ➡️Left-wing voters still have a slight preference for disabled candidates, as they value candidates who represent under-represented groups. (3/5).

➡️When parties aren’t revealed, left-wing voters give more support to disabled candidates; right-wing voters prefer non-disabled candidates. ➡️These preferences are almost entirely explained by ideology stereotypes: voters assume that disabled candidates are more left-wing. (2/5).

I’m very happy that my short paper on the effects of candidate disability on voter support, based on conjoint experiments in UK + US, will be published in the @The_JOP. It’s part of my project on stereotypes and voter attitudes towards disabled candidates. Key findings: (1/5).
