Let me say clearly: I do not believe SMU should be left out based on playing an extra game. But. there's precedent for this & it's strange no one has mentioned it. In 2022, USC was ranked No. 4 at the end of the regular season. They lost 47-24 in the P12 champ game & No. 5.
