Lightning - very common, not fully understood! Lightning also emits gamma rays which can be detected from space - and India's proposed @dakshasats will be the best detector ever built for understanding these "Terrestrial Gamma-ray Flashes"! @isro @IndiaDST @ANRFIndia @iitbombay.
Just. Wow. As we went over Mexico and the U.S. this morning, I caught this sprite. Sprites are TLEs or Transient Luminous Events, that happen above the clouds and are triggered by intense electrical activity in the thunderstorms below. We have a great view above the clouds, so

📃 New paper! Dr Divita Saraogi undertook the very tricky study of X-ray polarization properties of powerful cosmic explosions called Gamma-ray bursts 💥. To do this, she had to invent an entirely new technique to localize them on the sky! @iitbombay.

Deeply saddened to hear this. Prof Narlikar was a great scientist, an excellent human being, and a role model for all of us. He had a big influence on my career, leading to me becoming an astronomer.
