That's the beauty of the IPL and auction purses, which you cannot compare with football leagues like EPL etc. Teams cannot retain players they love "just because" however benevolent they are. Don't think Russell is past his expiry date, but KKR can't afford him out of value.

On KKR's release of Russell: He cost KKR 12 cr in real cash last season, but pushed KKR back by 18 cr when in auction purse (last season + this season too). I don't think that relationship is over just yet. I feel KKR will look get him back at the right value in the 12 cr range.
