@Reds
Griffey was going to play college football at Marshall, but opted to take the Reds offer to play baseball. That decision saved his life. Had Griffey signed with the Thundering Herd, he’d likely have been on the plane that crashed in 1970.
Congratulations to former Cabell Midland pitcher Madison Jeffrey of WVU for being picked by the Los Angeles Dodgers in the 15th round of the MLB Draft.

From a story I wrote for The Herald-Dispatch in Huntington, West Virginia, in 2014. Griffey told me this several years earlier at spring training.
Congratulations to Jackson Marshall of Sayre High School for signing a preferred walk-on offer with Marshall. His dad, Jim, played for the Thundering Herd in the early 1980s.
You know it’s a big game when Herd brothers Curtis Jones and Danny’ Derricott are here! Class AAA No. 1 Spring Valley (5-0) at No. 8 Cabell Midland (4-1).

Chesapeake coach Ryan Davis puts senior Austin Jackson in the game for a few seconds. Jackson tore an ACL in the sectional finals. Classy move. Standing O from both team’s fans.
Cabell Midland assistant George Brumfield gets tossed for “advising” an umpire. Not as colorful as drawing lines in the dirt with a bat, but the result is the same.
Redskins win! Maddie Mayberry’s goal off a kick on the mark gives Hurricane the victory and a state championship. Olivia Bird with two big saves.

Ironton’s Samantha LaFon with her first college basket, off an assist from Boyd County’s Savannah Wheeler brings Marshall within 44-42 of FIU, end 3Q.

Kudos to the folks at Fairland who conducted the Tri-State Hoops Throwdown today. It had a college feel and was the most well-done such event I’ve covered in 42 years of sports writing.

Huntington High wins the Class AAA, Region IV golf tournament. Cabell Midland finishes second. Both advance to the state tournament. The Highlanders’ Tanner Dorsey shoots 72 to win medalist honors.
A couple of firsts in my 40 years of sports writing: tonight I covered a high school basketball game while wearing shorts, and tomorrow plan to cover a baseball game a night after covering a regular-season basketball game. 🏀 ⚾️
The crowd Monday night at Coal Grove was the largest and loudest outside the state tournament I’ve seen for a girls basketball game in 38 years of sports writing. Well done Hornets and Dragons fans.
