It is indicative of the standards that the government is setting on patient safety – on your safety as a patient, on the safety of your loved ones. Nurses have not helped themselves: working unpaid overtime, covering the lack of staff by taking extra patients, working through.

The government and the media would have you believe that nurses are putting their patients at risk tomorrow by walking out and leaving the wards unstaffed. What they don’t report is that every single day most wards in acute hospitals are running on unsafe staffing levels.

We are striking for fair pay but that is not the whole story. If you ask any nurse in the middle of a busy shift what they need, they will not say more money, they will say more nurses. It is, fundamentally, about patient safety.

I am a nurse. Tomorrow I will strike. I am not an economist or a statistician so I can’t tell you about the real term costs on my bank account or the economy. What I can tell you is that I didn’t go into nursing for the money. I don’t know a single nurse that did.
