The original Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movie is an absolutely amazing film, and a massive part of the reason why it was so incredible is because they made The Shredder so incredibly badass.

The sculptors of the last three presidents should have brought more character to the faces. I was secretly hoping that WDI would have chosen a face that better conveyed President Trump’s personality. It didn’t necessarily have to be a smile—just a non-resting face.

Blaine also understood more than most that these figures were also going to move, so the personality in the face was needed to complete the illusion of life. A neutral face doesn’t easily express character.

Blaine continued the caricature practice with each successive president. For Ronald Reagan, for example, Blaine gave him the start of a smile, as if he could continue it at any moment. It brought out Reagan’s natural charm and Irish twinkle.

They weren’t 100% accurate (many of the presidents were never photographed), but interpretive caricatures—though not heavily exaggerated cartoons like the pirates. Blaine had struck an excellent balance between realism and caricature.

Being an animator first and a sculptor second, Blaine Gibson knew how to express personality in a single image. He infused his sculpts with character by adding a bit of emotion to the faces.

While the sculpts of Obama, Biden, and Trump have striven for slavish realism (to varying degrees), I’ve noticed a trend toward the figures having neutral facial positions.
