On maternity leave. Edit: @inkcapjournal Book: Nature's Ghosts
Durham
Joined March 2012
It is publication day! I put my heart, soul and SO MUCH time into writing Nature's Ghosts. It is a book about nature: about the rich & magical landscapes of the past, which humans destroyed, but which we can try to rebuild. I hope it makes a difference.

If someone wants to point me towards this elusive leading expert and prove me wrong, please do. Until then, I'm going to assume this is everything wrong with the media: why journalists aren't trusted, why proper journalists aren't paid, why people fear the natural world.

Lots of reporting – by lots of journalists, in lots of papers – about false widows this morning. All based on quote by 'top arachnologist Dr Tom Elwood'. Except Dr Tom Elwood does not exist. The story is not flagged as AI – though I assume that is what it is.

The @inkcapjournal digest has been on a bit of a break, thanks to the arrival of baby William at the end of January. Back very soon!

If you don't know them already, @WildIntrigue run brilliant wildlife events across north England (often involving delicious food), so if you're nearby and looking for Christmas presents still, do check them out! We've done a couple & they're always fab. https://t.co/NLTePPWebP

Really sorry to have to pull out of this lovely event with @WildIntrigue this evening, which I was so looking forward to. Once again, I am sick; winter + toddler + late-pregnancy seem to be an unfortunate combination for catching bugs. Hopefully, we will rearrange for next year.
Here's a link to the @WildIntrigue event, which also involves FESTIVE NIBBLES, hooray.

Tomorrow, it'll be six months since NATURE'S GHOSTS was published. Thanks to everyone who's read, commented & reviewed in that time! It has been mind-blowing. Funny story: it'll also be six months exactly since I discovered I was pregnant. The 23 May was quite a memorable day...

I've also set up an account for @inkcapjournal, which I will attempt to maintain with news of our latest features and digests. So do follow that. It's @inkcapjournal.bsky.social.

Like everyone else, I've set up an account on Bluesky: @sophieyeo.bsky.social. I probably won't use it much – at least at first – as I want to use my upcoming maternity leave to finish David Copperfield rather than scrolling.

@WildIntrigue And, for those on the other side of the river, I'm also doing an event at Gateshead library, also in December. https://t.co/VcTHXBcIsM

IMPORTANT NOTICE: Unfortunately Sophie is unwell so this event is now cancelled. Please do come along to Ouseburn Farm for 6.30pm and we will instead dive into the fascinating world […]

My first event in the northeast, somehow! Newcastle folks, come along. (If you're busy next week, I also have a @WildIntrigue event in December, at the wonderful Ouseburn Farm.)

Tomorrow, it'll be eight years exactly since I learned that Trump had become president & literally had a seizure on the streets of Marrakech. COME ON AMERICA, I don't have time for another bout of concussion, & the world doesn't have four years to wait on tackling climate change.

My wife Katie & @some_yeo have been working on this over the past few weeks. Thanks Sophie for giving us a platform to tell our story. For those that wonder about the inner workings & story behind Wild Finca, take a read.
I have been somewhat in awe of Katie Stacey, @LMasseyImages & their Wild Finca project for a while – while also secretly wondering how on earth they did it. Thrilled that Katie has written in detail about their efforts for @inkcapjournal. https://t.co/rrH7BSOYBg

In 2018, Katie Stacey and Luke Massey bought seven hectares of degraded land and named it Wild Finca. With little money or experience, they began to bring back nature.

Here are some photographs from one of my own recent trips. It's a beautiful area – with some wonderful cup-and-ring markings for the archaeologically inclined! – but it clearly has the potential to be so much more.

Either way, it is thrilling to see this level of ambition from a charity. The Rothbury Estate is well connected to other conservation & rewilding projects in the northeast – this has the potential to make an enormous difference to the region.
