Our paper "Solar Geoengineering, Learning, and Experimentation" will be published in the November 2024 issue of @JaereAere, co-authored with David Kelly, Juan Moreno-Cruz, and @soheilsh We look at how SGE deployment could accelerate or impede learning

Abstract Solar geoengineering (SGE) can offset climate change by directly reducing temperatures. Both SGE and climate change itself are surrounded by great uncertainties. Implementing SGE affects...

Across scenarios, transitions are achieved through different combinations of transfers from brown to green, investments in green capital, and R&D. In particular, the fast transition pathway relies very heavily on transfers of capital from the “brown” to the “green” sector. 🧵/5

While emissions fall in all pathways to achieve the greening of the economy, the fast pathway requires substantial emission abatement efforts in the “brown” sector, which results in a sharp decline in emissions. 🧵/4

Our work uses the baseline #DICE model as its point of departure and makes a number of key modifications and extensions which allow us to model the green transition in a stylized but meaningful way. 🧵/3

We consider three transition pathways, each defined by the speed of the shift from a fossil-fuel dominated economy 🤎 to one dominated by renewable energy sources 💚: constant (linear), fast, and delayed. 🧵/2

Interestingly, once malaria was eradicated in 1900s the positive impact of potato could be observed in previously-endemic areas! row (a) shows how potato helped non-endemic areas after 1700 row (b) shows malaria suppressed this trend but after 1900 similar trend emerged! 🧵/6

So it turned out that malaria actually suppressed the otherwise positive impact of potato on population/urbanization growth. Only non-endemic or very low endemic areas actually benefited from potato cultivation while higher endemic areas saw no significant changes! 🧵/5
