argwen’s relationship built itself on bonding over the same values both got. both of them love their people, care for others and would do anything if it meant saving camelot. while lancelot was gone, they started developing way more feelings.

it didn’t happen "just like that" mind you gwen was still crying over lancelot leaving her once again and arthur still had to live with the incertitude of not knowing if gwen was into him or waiting for lancelot to come back once again.

when she saw lancelot again, he was saving her from those who thought they kidnapped morgana ; it revived many of her feelings all while being interested in arthur. the serie clearly showed how she was still emotionally attached to lancelot but started to love arthur.

as for lancelot, you could tell gwen never knew when he would come back and it wasn’t like they even started a relationship together the moment she met him. it was very uncertain. you can love multiple persons at different times of your life without forgetting your first flirt.

while he was nearly dying, she went to talk to him and tell him she had faith in the world he’ll build as a future king. that’s the moment trust finally and fully got consolidated between arthur & gwen, opening possibilities for a relationship in s2.

the moment arthur got bitten by the questing beast is the real start of their romance. because gwen thought he was an idiot and someone selfish at first, she finally saw his good sides, devotion, actions and real nature after he saved merlin, the village & many more.

gwen fought for her own rights and he loved the way she was doing so while treating him like a normal human being outside of his title. he always expressed the way he wanted people to never give them privileges and that’s exactly what gwen was doing.

but if you take a closer look—as soon as arthur came to save merlin’s village in s1, you could already notice gwen trying to create a mutual trust with him by calling out arthur whenever he did/said something wrong or out of place.

and that is mostly the case because they both knew a king and a servant could never be romantically involved under uther’s kingdom. so that obviously didn’t even went through their minds hence why gwen responded to merlin she wouldve never had to choose between arthur & lancelot

saying argwen was rushed and came out of nowhere is a bit—weird, may i say. yes, the show’s production clearly was awkward at some moments and both of the characters "ignored" one another
