Emailing @BCLegislature's Hansard services to ask if they'll be bringing back the keyword search function for transcripts 🀞 It's been replaced with a set of indexes and they are not the same when it comes to searching for specific mentions in past debates πŸ™…β€β™€οΈπŸ™…β€β™€οΈ

Resource Stewardship Minister Randene Neill isn't told to prioritize 30 by 30 Her letter tells her to enable mining exploration and development in a way "that helps achieve" 30 by 30 I wonder which priority takes precedence if they end up at odds πŸ€”#bcpoli

The NDP government says it remains committed to protecting 30% of the province by 2030, for example Choosing between the economy and protecting the environment is a β€˜false choice,’ ” the statement continued. β€œWe can and we must do both.” However...

A treat to work with @ainscruickshank on this story analyzing and gathering reaction to the latest ministerial mandate letters The letters explicitly yoke nearly all environmental protection and conservation actions to protecting resource development interests #bcpoli

BC Premier David Eby wants his new cabinet to prioritize economic development and speed up permitting for resource projects. Will environmental protections take a backseat? @ainsliecruickshank and @sobittersosweet dig in #bcpoli https://t.co/LX6DUeQuVv

Asked if the mandate letters for his cabinet ministers will be publicly released in the near future, Eby said the priorities laid out in his speech at the Natural Resource Forum - mostly streamlining permitting - are the priorities for his ministers Sidestep much? #bcpoli

The North Coast Transmission Line The NDP government is planning to introduce legislation, making the BC Energy Regulator responsible for permitting the line and future high-voltage transmission lines #bcpoli

A little lookahead at some of the big environmental policy decisions coming up this year πŸ‘€ First up is the existing Fairy Creek deferral, which expires Feb 1. I'm told cabinet will be discussing it sometime this month #bcpoli

In 2025, I filed 46 freedom of information requests with the BC government Of those, 13 have not yet hit their legislated due date Of the 33 others, about half are overdue or the government has given itself an extension to respond #bcpoli

All this to say, the freedom of information system is Kafkaesque at best Public bodies and government ministries frequently break the law and fail to fulfill their obligations to provide timely responses to requests We file them anyways πŸ’β€β™€οΈ #bcpoli

I recently received a request for a 20-day extension to respond to an FOI FOR A BRIEFING NOTE πŸ₯² Another time, I was told ministry staff were confused about the title of the note I requested I directed them to the log they filed with that title (no file number) #bcpoli

All but two of the overdue FOIs are for briefing notes Meaning, I asked for a specific document that the ministry has publicly disclosed the existence of; provided detailed identifying information about said document; and used a narrow search range #bcpoli

When I FOI these briefing notes, I request a specific document, including a title and file number recorded by political staff You might think responding to these specific requests would be simple and prompt You would not (always) be correct #bcpoli

I mostly request briefing notes for cabinet ministers and senior bureaucrats Each ministry releases a list of these monthly, on a 3 mth delay; the list of June briefing notes comes out in Sept, for ex These often yield tidbits about policy priorities and planning #bcpoli

Less than 1/3 of the FOIs I have received responses to met the legislated 30 business day timeline for response The quickest response was 39 calendar days (within the timeline) The lengthiest was 179 days An FOI I filed in early June is still outstanding #bcpoli

Three of this year's FOIs have resulted in stories, including this one about missing data related to the Woodfibre LNG project after multiple FOIs yielded "no records" responses I'm already planning stories based on two others next year #bcpoli https://t.co/a35n9cdQNN
