7 hard truths about becoming a content creator in 2022:
After working with thousands of creators and speaking to 200+ who have "made it."
Here are some hard truths 🧵
As a pro, it’s tempting to avoid building a brand and only obsess over being the best player. Don’t.
Take advantage of the platform and resources around you.
Build a brand. You’ve got your whole life ahead of you.
Everyone wants to become a content creator.
No one wants to publish 100 videos that nobody will watch.
Everyone wants to become a streamer.
Nobody wants to stream to <10 people for 2 years.
3/ Quality doesn't really matter in the beginning.
You will suck at the start (and for a while after that)
Most of the content you put out in the first few years will cause you to🙄 when you look back.
Focus on reps and iterate between each rep.
2/ Only streaming significantly lowers your chance to be discovered.
You can network your way into communities etc. but discovery for Live content is REALLY BAD.
Not leveraging the discovery of other content types (e.g. TikTok, YouTube, IG, Twitter) will slow your growth.
1/ Variety isn't a winning strategy when starting out.
It's not to say you can't become variety later but you will significantly decrease your chances of making it in the beginning.
Few niches are too small when starting out and you can make them big.
4/ Most people make very little money from content creation.
If you're looking to make a quick buck, you're wasting your time. This a long game.
Some of the bigger creators today took 3 years before they started seeing results.
6/ Everyone experiences "Oh fuck what now"
Doesn't matter how successful you are, you will face this and if you're doing it for 10+ years - you'll see it many times.
The trick is not waiting until you're IN IT to be thinking about what's next.
7/ You can never take a day off and it'll still not be enough.
The "beast" never sleeps. The algorithm always wants more. There are billions of people spending hours each day watching content.
Without boundaries (and support), you'll struggle to go the distance.
5/ There is a GAME (and you have to play it to win)
Viewers action inform an algorithm and that algorithm is mostly responsible for getting your content to the right people.
What is informing the algorithm? Watch Time, Retention, CTR, etc.
I would LOVE to see
@Twitch
take no revenue share for creators first $50,000 of revenue on the platform (Bits, Subs, ADs)
This would change lives and make it a more viable career path.

Is there any you feel like I missed? Any you disagree with or have a different take? 👇
@JakeSucky
I spent almost 3 years building a competitor to Twitch at FB with unfair advantages (distribution, money, talent, tech) and it was a massive uphill battle.
I admire the courage to build and disrupt but I see many red flags here… wishing the founders all the best.
2 years married to my best friend ♥️
As two founders we find it hard to switch off but know how important it is.
Looking forward to needed R&R for both of us!
We are celebrating our anniversary by spending 9 days in the Amalfi Coast (Positano, Ravello, Capri, Ischia) 🇮🇹
Creators once you start making >$100 per month and are spending $ on gear, content, contractors etc.
📑 Setup as a Sole Proprietorship or LLC
🏦 Open a separate bank account
💳 Run your content expenses through a dedicated credit card.
This will make your life easier.
Grew up 30mins from each other in the UK and met 5000 miles away in SF.

finally convinced my wife to play video games! 🤣
bought a switch, I know I'm late to the party.🙈
What games have low barrier to entry / fun for couples?
My wife (now) wouldn’t respond to me on bumble so I took to Instagram to see if I could find her (👀🙈)
I also leveraged the FB office as a “cool date” spot 😄
Fast forward 3 years from that romantic date that she thought was like coffee with a friend...
We’re married ❤️
Some people are giving
@Ninja
a hard time for "selling out."
It's not selling out. It's his life. He's diversifying his business & exploring other avenues to future proof himself and his family long-term.
It's smart. If you're a fan, you should be supportive. Kudos to him!
I am so incredibly excited to share with you what we've been heads down building the last 6 months.

a 🧵 with a few reasons:
Esports teams should explore loyalty programs for fans.
Tiered rewards system based on inputs like:
- enagement with social
- twitch extensions to track watching games
- buying merch
- attending live events
- discord participation
Have any teams done this yet?
I've spoke with hundreds, if not thousands of streamers over the last few years and one of the recurring things that I run into is how lonely a caeer path it is.
Friends/Family don't understand and even though Viewers are supportive, it's hard to have a deep connection.
I learned of a steamer recently that makes six figures with 250 avg. live viewers.
There’s something to be said about building a solid niche with a loyal community.
Being discovered as a new streamer is really hard.
You cannot rely on the algorithm of Twitch, FB or YouTube Live to get you in front of an audience.
You need to increase the chances you'll be discovered by also creating VOD content.
A thread...👇
New Streamers:
You cannot rely on live-streaming platforms (especially Twitch) to be discovered.
Get creative & leverage platforms with better discovery.
Examples: YouTube VoD, Twitter, TikTok, Instagram, Snapchat, etc.
At Pipeline, we have worked with thousands of creators...
It's kind of surreal, over 5000 in the past 4 years!

I was a small town kid from Scotland who dreamed of opening a local PC store in my city.
League gave me the opportunity to travel the world, meet thousands of people, work at a top tech firm, meet my wife, build a company...
So grateful. Looking forward to celebrating! 🎉🥳
