Speciation and Conservation Biology are conceptually rooted in the tension of gene flow and isolation over time and space. This tension underpins the history, present, and future of all the organisms giving rise to our biosphere. #speciation #evolution #Conservation

However, these two key domains of biodiversity sciences are conceptually connected, practically inseparable, and reciprocally illuminating. "This collection of papers highlights their conceptual continuity across the speciation-extinction continuum". #conservation #speciation

Speciation & Conservation Biology seemed "paradoxically opposed, with speciation biology focused on the origin of species due to cessation of gene flow, and conservation science focused on preventing the extinction of species by the promotion of gene flow". #wildlife #endangered

Prediction (2): If climate change was a main contributor to the extinction, we should observe a drastic decline in the frog's climatic niche. We used the 1960-70 climate niche model as a baseline & projected towards extinction event. Here's our model training workflow. #climate

@monkymiau The minor Bd infection effect on body size indicates other potential stressors to the harlequin frog population. Indeed, we observed negative Tajima's D reflecting excessive rare alleles in the precious mtDNA samples collected before the extinction. #frog #conservation

@monkymiau Prediction (1) if Bd was the main cause of the mysterious extinction, there should be greater body size after the Bd epidemic in 1979, as larger frogs are more likely to survive after infection. We observed a marginal effect of Bd period, but strong sex & geo effects. #amphibian

@monkymiau We examined two extinction factors: (1) Bd fungus and (2) climate change. Bd was shown to incur directional selection for larger body sizes in lab frogs, as smaller frogs infected with Bd are more vulnerable, with higher rates of ion loss & energetic demands (Wu et al. 2018)
